Job purpose

This position is responsible to perform many duties around the store with a primary focus on customer service. Sales associates at Stone Soup Thrift Shop greet customers, help them find merchandise, and ring up final purchases; carry out the Basic Needs, Inc. mission statements.

Store Associate Duties and Responsibilities         

  1. Handle cash and credit sales, and close out till at the end of the day as needed

  2. Process, price and shelve incoming products

  3. Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the store

  4. Maintain shelf organization & stocking.

  5. Run the register, make sales, answer customers' questions, and channel customer complaints to proper avenues.

  6. Receive donations.

  7. Proactively communicate with management, staff, & volunteers

  8. Provide a safe and welcoming retail environment to customers of all abilities/experience

  9. Positive attitude and strong work ethic

  10. Professional, customer-friendly demeanor and appearance

  11. Willing to work a flexible schedule including weekends

  12. Previous production and/or inventory processing experience preferred

  13. Responsible for assuring excellent customer service to shoppers, donors and co- workers.

  14. Work as part of a team.

  15. Be available to work in the store, merchandise prep area, cashier, and donations areas.

  16. If designated, maintain accurate records or voucher usage.

  17. If designated, maintain accurate records of various recycling efforts and support the current recycling program.

  18. Personally be responsible for punching in and out on time.


1. Ability to work with individuals whose background may be considerably

      different from their own background.

2. Must successfully pass a Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) background

      check with no recorded convictions or security problems.

3. Experience with customer service and interacting with the public.

Working conditions

Needs to work days and weekends, shift work, working outdoors, working with challenging clients, and so forth.  Hours range from 15-20 hours/week and include Saturdays.

Physical requirements

  1. Requires ability to utilize hand trucks, pallet jacks, furniture dollies, and other equipment for moving heavy items.

  2. Must be able to stand, twist, bend and reach for a minimum of two hours and up to seven hours at a time.

  3. Must be able to lift 35 pounds without assistance.

Volunteer Coordinator

Reports To:

The Volunteer Coordinator will report to and be supported by the Store Manager

Schedule and Commitment:

20 hours per week; preferred 4 hours a day, Tuesday through Saturday.

Position Overview:

The Volunteer Coordinator is a part-time, salaried position at 20 hours per week. This position will supervise all Stone Soup Thrift Shop volunteers, oversee volunteer recruitment and onboarding, and work with staff and board to build organizational capacity through volunteerism.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff and volunteers to identify volunteer needs and opportunities to further organization’s mission through volunteer engagement

  • Oversee and support best practices for volunteer program, through collaboration with staff and volunteers:

    • Recruit, interview and screen volunteers

    • Orient and support new and current volunteers

    • Maintain volunteer position descriptions and volunteer files

    • Supervise, schedule and communicate with current volunteers

    • Assess and evaluate the volunteer program on a regular basis

  • Collaborate with staff to recognize volunteers throughout the year, including an appreciation event

  • Engage schools, businesses and other organizations in group volunteer projects

  • Manage the data collection process for volunteers through Volgistics

  • Build Volunteer Program capacity to help create sustainability for the organization

  • Participate in overall organization’s program planning, development and evaluation

  • Represent organization at community events and volunteer recruitment opportunities


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills

  • Previous experience supervising volunteers

  • Proficient in computer applications, including e-mail, Microsoft Office, and Internet

  • Ability to learn new computer systems and databases

  • Excellent relationship-building and problem-solving skills

  • Experience leading both individuals and groups of people

  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities

  • Understanding of volunteer engagement and how it builds capacity for a nonprofit organization

  • Strong attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum 2 years of experience coordinating volunteers

  • Experience working in a nonprofit setting, either as paid staff or volunteer

  • Event planning experience

  • Ability to update website content

  • Familiarity with St. Paul Park and the surrounding community
